History
History
The La Plata Public Library was founded in 1939 by the Atapal Club and was housed in the City Hall with donated books and volunteer help. In 1968 the library had outgrown it's space and was moved to its current location at 103 E Moore St. At this time the library had only one room in which the growing collection was housed. The library remained under the management of the Atapal Club until 1971, when the City of La Plata took over. In 1989, the library board remodeled the original space to finish the rear of the building, put in a new drop ceiling and carpet, refurbished the bathroom, built more shelving, and updated the windows in the front of the building. This room now houses the adult fiction collection, children's collection, the audio and visual collections. In 2003, the second room was purchased and refinished with a drop ceiling, shelving, carpeting, and a new back exit. This room houses our non-fiction collection, the genealogy section, and the public access computers. The third room was finished in 2005; it is currently used as our used book sale room.
